A cell phone with 16 cameras, is that even possible? LG says “Yes!” and has already filed such a patent some time ago. Now, this technology goes through the net and we will shed light on which features LG’s “lens matrix” should bring.

Nine lenses for a smartphone  – with this project, the company Light had already made headlines in the summer. Now the next manufacturer writes big headlines – with the promise to build a mobile phone with 16 cameras on the back. The corresponding patent was filed by the manufacturer LG in 2014 at the US Patent Office in Alexandria and has now been awarded.

How exactly the lenses should be arranged at the end on the back, is currently much speculation. It is clear that LG here speaks of a 4 × 4 lens matrix and should enable to shoot photos from different perspectives with a single subject. This means that even 3D objects can be photographed from a single photo. The lenses should both be able to play together, as well as individually selected.

With this lens matrix, for example, the subsequent photo and video editing should be easier. The technology provides a series of photos from which the user can decide afterwards which part of the picture is taken from which shot. For example, a person’s head can be transferred from one image to another. Objects within the photo can also be rotated and aligned perfectly with the camera, or manipulations of a 3D video taken with the smartphone can be subsequently manipulated.

All of these features require artificial intelligence to detect objects and people in shots. This is known in a weakened form of other manufacturers, where the cell phone, for example, sunsets, food or animals can recognize.

However, there is one more special feature: the 16 camera lenses should also be used to shoot selfies. A second display on the back would be too much of a good thing, which is why you fall back on a kind of mirror here. We hope to find out soon what that will look like in the end. As always, however, applies to patents, which is nothing safe and secure here. It could also be that LG wants to secure this technology only, so they do not snatch them away.
